Training for the Everest Base Camp Trek

95% Success on our Everest Treks

We have a 95% success rate on our Everest base camp treks to date.  On most trips we get 100% success if people show up physically prepared. Less than 60% of people are making it all the way up to Everest Base Camp at 5,364m/ 17,598 feet. Even less make it up Kala Patthar 5,645m/ 18,520 feet. Hiking up Kala Patthar is one of the main reasons to make this adventure.

Unique Everest Base Camp Trekking Itineraries

Sleeping at Everest Base Camp – Our most popular trek to Mount Everest includes sleeping at Everest Base Camp. This itinerary is slightly longer but worth the effort to hike up Kala Patthar for sunset. After experiencing the sun setting on Mount Everest. The followed day you will hike into Everest Base Camp and sleeping at the base of the World’s Highest Mountain. You can even get married there!

Traditional Everest Trek – One of our most popular Everest trekking itineraries follows the original trail to Mount Everest. Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa climbed Mount Everest in 1953 and they used this route to reach Everest Base Camp (EBC). Back then Everest Base Camp was in GoraK Shep. The Everest Base Camp we know was Camp 1. Our EBC trekkers are literally “following in the footsteps” of the greats: Hillary and Tenzing and all the 400 team members that helped them reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Kilimanjaro Treks

It’s official, we have Kilimanjaro’s Number one Guide leading our team. Firstly, our head guide was voted Kilimanjaro’s number 1 guide in 2019. Secondly, our Kilimanjaro treks are up to the highest standards. We have built an amazing team up over 15 years of working on Kilimanjaro.

Athumani has trekked to Everest Base Camp and climbed on Island Peak. He has dreams of climbing Mount Everest but while he is dreaming, he will be leading you up and down Kilimanjaro. He has climbed Kilimanjaro over 300 times and is well on his way to 500 summits.

20 Reasons to Pick Ian Taylor Trekking

Ian Taylor Trekking has been organizing quality climbs up Kilimanjaro for over 15 years!  We want to provide a service that gives our clients the best possible experience when traveling to Tanzania.  Here are 20 reasons to consider joining an Ian Taylor Trekking team on Kilimanjaro.

All You Need to Know About Climbing Kilimanjaro

If you are trying to gather the correct information you need, just pick up the phone and call us.  We are based in Eagle-Vail, Colorado, and are experts on everything Kilimanjaro.

Here is a best-of-all blog post we have developed to help you gather all the information you need for your Kilimanjaro adventure. After leading thousands of people to the summit of Kilimanjaro we have designed the best itinerary for safety and success.

Go straight to our Lemosho Route page and learn more about our unique itinerary. Ian has climbed Kilimanjaro over 40 times which has helped develop our specific training and preparation for Kilimanjaro.

Follow Us

Why not check out our Top 50 Tips for a safe and successful ascent of Kilimanjaro? Follow our Facebook page and Instagram feed to keep up to date with our trips around the world.

The Lemosho Route

The Lemosho route on Kilimanjaro has given us a 95% SUCCESS RATE. We have designed our own itinerary to give you the best safety and success. Personally, this is our favorite route with the best acclimatization and scenery on the mountain. The trek through the rainforest is stunning and you feel like you are really out there off the beaten track, the trail is raw and beautiful.

You also get three days to yourself as you trek out of the rainforest and across the Shira Plateau towards the summit of Kilimanjaro. We know this route gives the best acclimatization for your attempt on Kilimanjaro.

So, if you want to enjoy the experience and get to the top, this has to be the route for you. You will not regret giving yourself the best chance at successfully making the summit of Africa’s highest peak.

The Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

The dry months – Mountains can be unpredictable, and inclement weather can surface unexpectedly at any time of the year. But on the whole, the following months are the best time to climb – January and February or June to October. Treks around Christmas time are also popular, but December can be a month that is variable in weather.

The rainy seasons – The mountain’s wettest months stretch over two rainy seasons. The shorter rains fall from November through mid-December. March through May brings the long rainy season. Trekking during the rains does have its benefits, with the routes emptying out as visitors shy away from the wet weather. If you want to experience quiet paths and greater solitude, this is the time to go.

For experienced trekkers who can handle the downpours, it’s a consideration. But this is a challenging time to trek, and success rates drop compared to dry season attempts. For most people, it is best avoided.

We’ve put together a month-by-month guide to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro here. This will help you tailor a Kilimanjaro trek to the time that matches your schedule.

Climb Kilimanjaro With the Experts

In conclusion, If you are signing up for one of our Kilimanjaro treks, we will send you an itemized kit list.  We also send you our 40-page dossier with important information prior to arriving in Tanzania. While you wait for that list, you can check out our Kilimanjaro packing video.

Ian has climbed Mount Everest to the top and Kilimanjaro 40+ times, giving you the best available information you need to make your trip a success. Drop us an email today, and we look forward to helping you on your way to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

FAQs about Trekking Kilimanjaro

What’s the weather like on Mount Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro’s weather varies with elevation and location – you’ll find warm, lush rainforest at the base while overnight temps routinely drop below freezing higher up. The conditions can change quickly as you experience these different microclimates.

It’s all part of the trekking experience that makes it all the more adventurous and memorable. I have been on the summit one week when the temperature is 20F and the follow week 0F.

What are the success rates for reaching the summit?

We can proudly boast an extremely high summit rates of 95%. It is 95% because we either use the northern route or 8 days on the Lemosho Route using Kosovo Camp. Our expert guides and Kilimanjaro’s Number 1 guide have extensive experience leading treks up Kilimanjaro and pacing groups appropriately to maximize acclimatization. This ensures the best chances possible for every group to make it to Uhuru Peak safely.

What are the different Kilimanjaro routes?

There are several route options used by climbers attempting to summit Kilimanjaro, including the Machame route, Rongai route. Our Favored routes are the Lemosho route using Kosovo Camp and the Northern route. These are the two best routes for safety and success.  Our personal favorite is Lemosho.

Can beginners climb Kilimanjaro?

Many of our customers have never summitted a mountain before embarking on our Kilimanjaro trek. With the proper preparation and our expert guidance, reasonably fit beginners can reach the peak without prior technical climbing or hiking experience. Check out our training advice for Kilimanjaro.

What will I eat on your Kilimanjaro trek?

We serve three, three course filling, delicious meals served daily, leaving you satisfied and energized for each next day, conquering Kilimanjaro. We can also cater to all dietary requirements. Read our blog post about food on Kilimanjaro here.

Will there be oxygen available on the trek?

Yes, for the utmost safety, we have emergency oxygen supplies on all of our Kilimanjaro treks. While we take ample precautions through our pacing and acclimatization schedule to allow climbers’ bodies to adjust to the altitudes naturally, we also carry emergency oxygen as a precaution.

Will we have our own toilets?

We have our own private toilets on all our trips along with Mountain Hardwear Trango 4 tents, and Mountain Hardwear dome tents with comfortable chairs for your comfort on Kilimanjaro.

How do I prepare for the Kilimanjaro climb?

Summiting Kilimanjaro is no walk in the park – it takes serious preparation. Many underestimate the demanding conditions high on the mountain. As a result, some come underprepared. We can help with training advice five days a week in the months before the trek. We can tailor a workout plan to help you specifically target the endurance and strength needed. Thanks to this personal coaching, you’ll arrive on the mountain in your best condition to tackle the strenuous summits and challenges ahead.

Annapurna Treks

Nothing Less Than Spectacular

Our Annapurna treks treks are nothing less than spectacular. You check into Kathmandu for a night to enjoy this wonderful city. You then head to Pokhara which is west of Kathmandu. Once you arrive in Pokhara you can explore this city by the lake. Wonder around this beautiful town with great Himalayan views.

Poon Hill

Mera and Lobuche Peak Climbs

This adventure to climb Mera and Lobuche peaks is one of the worlds great Himalayan mountaineering adventures. A wilderness climbing challenge like no other. You fly into Lukla high in the Himalayas and instead of heading up the normal Everest Route we head south off the beaten track towards Mera Peak. Read some REVIEWS from our trips.

Top 10 Tips for Mera Peak

Check out our Mera Peak page and read our top 10 tips for climbing Mera peak.  On this trip we use lodges for the first portion of the trip and then moving to a camping trip.  We have chosen an acclimatization program that gives you great diversity in the terrain along with giving your body the time needed to adjust correctly to the lack of Oxygen and climb above 5,500m/ 18,044 feet. If you are looking for further information CONTACT US.

Crossing the Amphulaptsa pass to Lobuche Peak

Before you get to Lobuche peak you walk through the uninhabited Hunku valley. This valley to the east of Mera Peak passes the amazing Chamlang mountain before moving towards Amphulaptsa base camp perched above a beautiful lake.

The lake is mostly frozen in the pre monsoon season.  The Amphulaptsa pass is a mountaineering pass and requires previous mountaineering experience. After you cross the Ampulaptsa Pass at 5,815m there is a steep abseil and a steep traverse down to the valley floor.

Top 12 Tips for Lobuche Peak

Once we get to the bottom we have a long but amazing walk down towards Chuckung.  This next day we will then trek south into the Imja valley toward Dingbouche before moving towards Lobuche Base Camp 4,900m/ 16,076 feet.

There is an opportunity to undertake more training if needed. The following day the team will rest at Lobuche Base Camp, before moving to Lobuche High Camp 5,200m/ 17,060 feet before a long assault on the summit 6,119m/ 20,075 feet. We will move onto the main Everest trekking route. Check out out TOP 12 TIPS for climbing Lobuche Peak.

Mera and Lobuche Peaks Training

We will spend 3 nights in Khare at 4,950m/ 16,240 feet giving us time go over the technical training for Mera, Amphulaptsa Pass and Lobuche peak. We will do some rope training, become completely comfortable with using ice axe, crampons, jumar, harness and abseiling using a figure of 8 moving between fixed lines.

Alongside technical training, you will have an optimal acclimatization plan with two nights at Mera Peak Base Camp before moving to Mera Peak High Camp. We have the best itinerary and acclimatization before making our way to the summit of Mera Peak at 6,476m/ 21,246 feet.

Climbing on Mera Peak is relatively straight forward but these skills will be needed for crossing the Amphulaptsa pass and Lobuche peak summit day. These are the most difficult mountaineering days of the whole trip. Coming with abseiling/ rappelling experience is a must for this trip. We have courses available in Scotland and Colorado.

Mera and Island Peak Climbs 2019

The Return Journey to Lukla

From Lobuche Peak we will make the 4 day journey back to the famous Tengbouche, Namche Bazaar, Lukla and back to Kathmandu. We will stop at the famous Tengbouche Monastery and lthere will be time to explore Namche before we make the long trek back to Lukla where the journey began.

Contact us and find out more information about this exciting adventure. We have a wealth of information about these climbs. Our Mera & Lobuche Peak Climbs will be professionally led trips with top notch climbing Sherpa’s.

Secondly, we will have to see you in action on at least two of our high altitude trips before we can sign you up to a Cho Oyu trip.  We are firm believers in team over individual endeavors. This will limit the number of trips we run but maximize safety. You can learn more about some of the mountains we expect you to have climbed before thinking about Cho Oyu.

The final slope to the summit of Cho Oyu
Ian Taylor Trekking on the summit of Cho Oyu

The Sixth Highest Mountain in the World

Cho Oyu is the world’s 6th highest mountain. The world has 14 mountains above the height of 8,000m/ 26,246 feet. In our opinion you need to climb an 8,000m peak before trying to attempt climbing Everest. If Cho Oyu is your goal it will not disappoint.

Experience we Require

You should have been on one of our winters skills course in Scotland or Colorado along with having been on a number of Alpine mountaineering trips. We will require that you have climbed  AconcaguaDenaliIsland peak or Mera Peak and show an excellent level of mountaineering skill. These are just some of the mountains, you should have climbed before joining a Cho Oyu expedition.

Physical Preparation

We know you will have a wealth of hiking and trekking experience at altitude. It is extremely important to take a scientific approach in your training.  If you are thinking of climbing Cho Oyu we can help you build an extensive training plan. You will need to undertake a number of Vo2 max tests as part of your preparation. You will need to be able to benchmark your progression over a 8 to 12 month period.

We do require that you join some of our trekking and mountaineering trips in order to come fully prepared. We like to build teams working together so you will have either climbed with teammates before or you will have constant access to each other to make sure everyone is accountable to the team.  We all go with a team mentally, working together to achieve this goal. Follow us on Instagram.

Get in Touch Today

Climbing Oyu Oyu is not easy and needs careful consideration, training and conditioning to have a chance to success. We will have an excellent acclimatization schedule in place with additional days to acclimatize correctly. This will give you the best possible chance to success.

We will only have 10 spaces open on this climb and will not accept people without the required experience. The climb will take 6 weeks so a lot of planning needs to be done prior to the trip. CONTACT US for more information.

Lobuche Peak Climbs

Lobuche East Peak has taken over from Island Peak. Island Peak, once a favorite, has become increasingly risky, and we’ve shifted our focus to Lobuche East as our primary 6,000m peak in Nepal’s Everest region. After 15 years of guiding successful Lobuche East expeditions, we’ve crafted a unique itinerary that maximizes your safety and summit success. Check out our Lobuche Peak page.

Safety First

Recent changes have escalated the dangers on Island Peak, particularly with rockfall hazards on the head wall. Additionally, the skill level of climbers attempting Island Peak has declined, raising concerns. For these reasons, we have moved all our fixed line climbing trips to Lobuche East peak.

Offering Lobuche Peak climbs on our unique itinerary put you first and offers the best safety and success on this challenging peak climb in the Everest region. Check out our TOP TIPS.

With additional support staff and enhanced safety measures, including using Lobuche High Camp and fixing our own ropes high on the mountain, we deliver an unparalleled 6,000m climbing experience in the Everest region.

Rock wall on Lobuche East

Why Lobuche East Peak Requires More Than Just Trekking Skills

Our Lobuche East Peak videos clearly demonstrate that this is not just a trekking peak. It’s a true mountaineering challenge, requiring technical skills and rope work at high altitudes.

That’s why we bring highly qualified guides to fix ropes on all our Lobuche Peak climbs, ensuring your safety and success. We strongly recommend completing one of our winter skills mountaineering courses before attempting Lobuche Peak.

These courses, available in Scotland and Colorado, equip you with the necessary skills for steep snow and ice conditions, preparing you for a safe and successful summit in the Himalayas.

Climbing at 6,000m/ 20,000 feet on a 60 to 70 degree angle requires more safety. This is why we fix our own ropes on this challenging terrain at extreme altitude.  READ MORE about our approach to climbing Lobuche East peak.

Africa

Climb Mount Toubkal

Trek and Climb with Experts

Ian has climbed Toubkal many times and is available to help you prepare for your Toubkal climbing adventure. We have a 100% success rate – second to none. To climb Mount Toubkal, you must be prepared. Snow in winter and hot days in the summer mean that you need to pick your climbing season.

The trek passes through impressive landscapes on well-defined paths encompassing breathtaking scenery. As we climb higher, the paths become steeper and rugged in places. This rewarding trek passes through remote villages and terraced fields offering us insight into the life of the hardy and friendly Berber people.

We have a range of itinerary options for climbing Mount Toubkal. We also have a range of services from basic to 5 star hotels with the option of adding more guides and/or support for your climb. The start of the trek is just a couple of hours’ drive from Marrakesh in the beautiful town of Imlil.

The Adventure starts in Imlil

All adventures on Mount Toubkal start in this unique mountain town. Imlil has a unique mountain vibe and one we are sure you will enjoy. The food and people are warm and welcoming; Imlil is a nice place to relax before and after your trek. Toubkal is a great experience on its own, but you should consider additional time in Morocco and time around these mountain villages. Make sure you find time to explore Morocco’s most captivating city, Marrakesh.

Add on a Trip to the Desert

While in Morocco it is also worth spending an extra few days to explore the desert, cities and unique picturesque scenery Morocco has to offer.

Going to Morocco is a really interesting cultural experience. Morocco has a wide range of adventures available, and we can tailor a climb, trek, desert trekking, nomadic visits or just relax on the beach after your trek to Toubkal. Follow us on Instagram.

Climb Denali

Climb Denali in Alaska with our professional team and take on one of the toughest mountains on Earth. At 6,190m (20,310ft), Denali is the highest peak in North America and a true mountaineering challenge. Our Denali expedition is designed only for climbers with extensive high-altitude and technical mountaineering experience.

Climbing Denali requires more than ambition—it demands a solid foundation of mountaineering, altitude, and fixed line climbing experience. For everyone’s safety, we only accept climbers we have personally seen in action on previous expeditions, ensuring the skills, judgment, and resilience needed for this extreme environment.

We also encourage you to bring a trusted climbing partner, as you will be roped together throughout the climb. This approach not only builds safety into the team but also strengthens the shared experience of tackling one of the world’s most challenging peaks.

On the summit of Denali

Minimum Skills and Experience Required for Denali

To be considered for our Denali expedition, climbers must demonstrate:

  • High-altitude experience: Successful climbs above 6,000m / 20,000 feet.
  • Technical mountaineering skills: Proficiency with crampons, ice axe, and self-arrest techniques.
  • Fixed line competence: Experience ascending and descending fixed ropes using jumars, belay devices, and safety systems.
  • Team rope travel: Comfort moving as part of a roped team in glaciated terrain for long periods of time.
  • Heavy load carrying: Ability to carry and pull 25–35kg (55–77 lbs) over multiple days in extreme conditions.
  • Cold weather survival: Knowledge of camp craft, layering systems, and living in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Previous expeditions with our team: We must have seen you in action on one of our climbs before approving you for Denali.

This ensures that every climber is fully prepared for the unique physical and technical demands of North America’s highest peak.

We work with guides approved for Denali National Park guiding making sure your safety is number one. Ian has climbed Denali 3 times so learn from his experience.
Climbing Denali required good level of mountaineering experience and excellent physical conditioning for load carrying at High Altitude.

16,000 feet on Denali

Denali is Not Easy

Climbing Denali in Alaska is a challenging and rewarding endeavor, attracting experienced mountaineers from around the world. Standing at 20,310 feet (6,194 meters), Denali is the highest peak in North America, and its unpredictable weather and severe conditions make the climb demanding.

The climb typically involves a 3 week expedition, requiring climbers to navigate through glaciers, crevasses, and steep ice and rock sections.

The West Buttress route is the most popular, offering a gradual ascent, but climbers must be prepared for extreme cold, high altitudes, and potential hazards.

Climb Denali

Show up Physically Prepared

Proper preparation is essential, including physical conditioning, technical skills in ice and snow, and acclimatization to altitude. Climbers often spend several weeks on the mountain, acclimating to the thin air and adjusting to the challenging conditions.

It’s crucial to be well-equipped with appropriate gear, such as insulated clothing, mountaineering boots, and specialized equipment for glacier travel. Many climbers hire experienced guides or join guided expeditions to enhance safety and increase the chances of a successful summit.

In summary, while Denali’s climb is undoubtedly difficult, it offers a unique and awe-inspiring adventure for those with the necessary skills, experience, and determination.

Joining Us on Denali

Climbing Denali is on every 7 summiteers mind and one of the hardest mountains to climb for a range of reasons. Cold temperature, carrying heavy loads, being self sufficient all make for a challenges and rewarding mountaineering experience.

Climbing Denali on the West Buttress route has become the main route of choice for most Denali ascents, due to its relative ease of access and flights into the national park. We only allow people to join our teams that we have seen in action on a range of peaks.

Climbing on Denali

Training for Denali

Climbing Denali is a serious undertaking! Your training  program to climb Denali must also be a serious undertaking. The rigors of a 3-week expedition to high altitude require a lot of effort from its team members.

The more physically prepared you are for this workload; the better becomes your chance of success on the mountain.

Not only does being mountain fit make the experience a lot more enjoyable, it is practically a prerequisite for expedition mountaineering and can make or break the climb.

We do require that people signing up to climb Denali with us have climbed with us before and we need to see a good resume of mountaineering and high altitude experience. Contact us for training advice and more information about signing up.

Climbing Denali in Alaska

Denali Climbs

Besides spending long hours travelling the glacier and gaining altitude while carrying a heavy pack and pulling a sled.  It is hard work setting up camp, shoveling tent platforms, and building snow walls.

Remember, climbing Denali requires careful planning, preparation, and respect for the mountain’s unpredictable nature. Always prioritize safety and be ready to turn back if conditions become too challenging.

The ascent normally takes 21 days. The main difficulties being the large crevasses that often block the route to the summit. Before climbing Huascaran in Peru we advise adding an ascent above 5,000m/ 16,404 feet to give additional acclimatization. Aconcagua Expeditions

The Vacas Valley Traverse Route

We love Aconcagua expeditions on the Vacas Valley route or Polish traverse route on Aconcagua. The trek into Plaza Argentina Base Camp has less people and is a more interesting way to climb Aconcagua. The downside is you have to carry our gear and equipment. You can get around this by hiring additional porter support. The views in the Vacas valley and above Base Camp are far more interesting than the normal route up Aconcagua.

Climb Aconcagua with Experts

We are available 5 days a week in support of your Aconcagua Expedition. We want to help you understand how the expedition plays out and how you can prepare. Our goal is help you have the best experience possible on Aconcagua.

We have showers, chef, Wi-Fi and comfortable Base Camp.  Aconcagua is technically straight forward but the altitude, weather and cold temperatures can cause a wide range of challenges.

The Differences in the Routes

The Big Aconcagua question, should I take the Normal Route or Traverse Route? Or take on the Polish Glacier route. What is your goal on Aconcagua. Experience as much of the mountain as possible.

Are you trying to make the challenge harder for an even bigger climb? Looking for the easiest way up and down the mountain? Are you testing your gear for future trips or gain more high altitude experience? Schedule a call and check out our TOP TIPS for climbing Aconcagua.

Aconcagua Requires More Acclimatization

The first time I climbed Aconcagua was on a 14 day itinerary, this was a big mistake on a poorly managed trip.  Over the years we learned that more acclimatization and more contingency days offers you the best chance at successfully reaching the summit.

Once we reach Base Camp we have four nights for further acclimatization. Once we move higher on the mountain we will have 6 days of carrying expedition equipment and our personal gear higher on the mountain.

We will have a rest day in Camp 2 5,500m/ 18,044 feet before moving to Camp 3 and our summit attempt. Check out our itinerary.

Aconcagua Expeditions

Previous Altitude Experience

When thinking of climbing Aconcagua, It is important to have some previous high altitude experience. Having climbed peaks like KilimanjaroIsland peak, Mera Peak or Cotopaxi and used to carrying a weighted backpack, then Aconcagua could be the trip for you.

We have a well established team on the mountain with highly experienced guides. Give yourself more comfort and a more enjoyable overall experience on one of the 7 summits.

Aconcagua Expeditions With Experts

Check out our Aconcagua page. We normally run 4 Aconcagua expeditions trips each year, alongside a number of private groups with the right experience. Bagging one of the seven summits should be on every trekkers mountain bucket list.

Our Aconcagua Expeditions offer you the best chance at fulfilling that dream.  Check out our Aconcagua itineraries, they offer you 3 or 4 opportunities to reach the summit.
